“It sounded like my voice was off and I knew I couldn’t show up. So what I chose to do was just go and do the best that I could.”

While Matthew was explaining his situation of the past, Diane Sawyer was also noting the “wear and tear on his voice and speech.” As Perry explained before too, he was into addiction while filming Friend reunion in April. However, after realization, he became sober in the release of the reunion in May 2021.

In an interview with Diane, Matthew also stated that his co-star, Jennifer Aniston was always there for him at his lowest. He praised her for being a good and true friend. According to Perry, Jennifer explained to him about his scary drug and alcohol use while filming.

Likewise, he also spent half his life in treatment or in sober living houses and has been to detox 65 times. This doesn’t end here as Perry later revealed that he came really closer to death as the doctor said he has a 2% chance of living.

In the year 2018, he had his colon burst from opioid overuse and he was kept in the hospital for five months. Not only this but Matthew also spent two weeks in a coma. However, he claimed that he suffered from gastrointestinal perforation and he used a colostomy bag for nine months. According to him,

“The doctors told my family that I had a 2 percent chance to live. I was put on a thing called an ECMO machine, which does all the breathing for your heart and your lungs. And that’s called a Hail Mary. No one survives that.”

Meanwhile, Perry also stated that he was lucky at the time cause the other four people who had the same couldn’t make it to an end.

The main person who was his motivator for staying sober is his therapist. Matthew explained how his therapist helped him. He stated,

“My therapists used to say, ‘The next time you think about taking Oxycontin, just think about having a colostomy bag for the rest of your life.'”

Previously, in an interview with the NY Times, Perry mentions that he spent a total of $9 million to get sober. However, his career in “Friends” was also taking an end due to his addiction.
