Meghan Markle and Mariah Carey talked about their struggles with natural hair while shooting in the “Archetypes” podcast episode. They shared their bad experiences from the past.
Meghan Markle welcomed the “Queen of Christmas”, Mariah Carey in her podcast episode. On Tuesday, her “Archetypes” podcast episode was shown featuring the guest Mariah.
Similarly, they both discussed their experience with natural hair and the problem they used to face while shooting.
Likewise, Meghan talked about Carey’s 1993 music video for “Dreamlover” in which Mariah had curly hair. However, Carey explained her experience, and while listening it seems like the experience wasn’t good. As she stated,
“People were saying, ‘girl next door’ … because there was also this ambiguity about me, racially, that fed into that, and those curls.”
Additionally, Mariah also said the hairdressers also didn’t know how to fix her hair. It was tough and she could only fix her hair naturally as her hair didn’t support her many times. Further, she explained,
“Here’s the thing: They didn’t know how to do my hair, because if it 44was a white hairdresser that had never dealt with textured hair, they would tend to do a different thing. And my hair would be like, ‘You’re not doing that!'”

Although, she did her hair with a hairstylist who exclusively worked with natural looks the result she got was not liked by her.
She said that the final result of the hair “would become too much product and too much weight.”

Meanwhile, Carey also explained her hair situation when she was a child. As she was born to a white mother and a black father. She further added that nobody knew how to fix her hair when she was a little girl. Mariah also said,
“I think sometimes when it’s the other way around, you get the benefit of someone who’s dealt with textured hair”
Meghan also agreed with Carey’s situation and added that she also used to have her hair thick and so curly. Recently, her natural hair was shown during a video call and she also talked about her maternal grandmother, Jeannette who used to tie her hair. Moreover, Markle stated,
“She’d go, ‘Just hold on to the sink,’ and I would grip my little hands on both sides. You have no luxury of being tender-headed.”

Further Explanation
Not only this, but Markle also shared that she adored Mariah Carey. Meghan continued,
“And Mariah was mixed, like me. She was an aspirational figure I could see … and you have to see it to believe it, they say. Well, I could see her. And it made me feel like I was also seen.”
At the end of their chat, Carey called Markle a “diva” which made her nervous. Similarly, the Duchess of Sussex was confused if Mariah was complimenting or criticizing. However, Carey explained that diva describes the “grandeur” of an operatic voice and powerhouse woman.

Likewise, Mariah Carey says,
“As things evolved [in] the past, whatever, 20 years, it became, like, a diva means you’re a successful woman, usually, but also … a b-i-t-c-h. It’s not OK for you to be a boss. It’s not OK for you to be a strong woman.”

However, Meghan still thought that Carey was dissing her directly as she stated,
“You couldn’t see me, obviously, but I started to sweat a little bit … I just kept thinking, at that moment, was my girl crush coming to a quick demise? Does she actually not see me?”
In addition, she continued,
“When she said ‘diva,’ she was talking about the way that I dress, the posture, the clothing, the ‘fabulousness’ as she sees it. She meant diva as a compliment, but I heard it as a dig …”
Lastly, the former actress stated,
“At that moment, as she explained to me, she meant it as chic, as aspirational. And how one very charged word can mean something different for each of us, it’s mind-blowing to me.”
