Michael van Gerwen| Early Life and Family
On April 25, 1989, a darts genius named Michael was born in Boxtel, Netherlands. His father is Henri van Gerwen, and his mother is Wilma van Gerwen.
The three siblings of Michael are Samantha van Gerwen, Kevin van Gerwen, and Peggy van Gerwen.
Michael has cherished athletics ever since he was a young youngster. When he was 12 years old and playing football, he was a defender.
When he was 13 years old, he started to concentrate on darts. Then Michael started playing darts regularly. At the age of 14, Michael advanced to the Primus Masters Youth event final.
The German Open, German Gold Cup, Norwegian Open, Swedish Open, and Northern Ireland Open are just a few of the young player events he began winning in 2005. He also won the Dutch National Youth Championship and the German Open.
He also won the youth championships and launched the men’s events in Norway and Northern Ireland in the same year.
Before becoming a full-fledged professional darts player, Michael worked as a tiler.

As previously noted, the Dutch dart player began playing at the age of 13 and become a pro at age 17.
As a teenager competing in multiple Open tournaments, Gerwen broke the record, taking the darts world by storm.

With a strong throw on nine darts in 2007, Gerwen defeated dart players like Raymond van Barneveld. That same year, he also had a clean sweep over Phil “The Power” Taylor.
Later, after making it to two PDC Youth World Championship finals, he improved and enjoyed himself, which led to a stunning career turnaround.
Additionally, as time went on, Michael won a number of titles and in 2011 was voted Young Player of the Year.
With his greatest efforts, Gerwen won seven Pro Tour and World Grand Prix championships. The Dutch player came within one dart of becoming the first to pull off the feat in back-to-back legs.
PDC career
Van Gerwen was placed at number 88 in the first PDC World Rankings. He was a BDO player who had already qualified for some BDO events in his home country before switching to the PDC. This includes the Open Holland in 2006, where he took first place.
He made his PDC debut on January 20 at the non-televised Stan James Players Championships in Gibraltar, defeating Andy Hamilton before losing to fellow countryman Roland Scholten in the round of 16.

He made his PDC televised debut at the 2007 UK Open, where he was defeated by Colin Osborne in the round of 32. Van was one leg from winning at 12-10 when Ronnie Baxter eliminated him in round two of the World Matchplay in Blackpool. His attempt to enter the 2007 Las Vegas Desert Classic was unsuccessful.
He faced Phil Taylor in the first round of the 2008 PDC World Championship; interestingly, he just needed one dart at double 12 to win the match and defeat the 13-time world champion. Taylor would not have made it to another PDC World Championship Final, breaking an extraordinary streak.
In the quarterfinals of that year, Wayne Mardle broke Taylor’s winning streak.

Van Gerwen held his throw in the following leg to claim a 5-4 victory. Van Gerwen faced Rob Cross, a first-time World Championship competitor, in the semifinal. After throwing the first eight sets, van Gerwen broke to take a 5-4 lead.
Van Gerwen dropped his throw in set 10’s opening throw, falling behind two legs to one. In the fifth leg of the set, which he would have been throwing for the entire match, he then missed six darts, which allowed Cross to enter the fray and tie the match at five sets apiece.
Controversies
The “Coughing” incident
In 2022, Luke Humpries attacked Michael for employing unethical methods. Michael is said to have started coughing while Luke was on the oche trying to win the match.
When Michael exited the match, Humpries was furious. However, Luke has refuted Michael’s claims that his coughing was a ploy.
The “Beer” incident
During the 2018 World Darts Championship, beer was thrown in the direction of Michael van Gerwen, the champion.
Behind the walk-on, the area is where the incident took place. Michael awaited the audience’s introduction. But immediately, a bystander threw a beer his way.
Michael and his bodyguard were covered in alcohol, and the player wasn’t sure how to react.
Despite being horrified by the situation, Michael said he felt helpless to do anything about it. The incident required Michael to go back and change his shirt, delaying the start of the match.
