Miguel Layun is a well-known Mexican footballer. He has represented Mexico on several occasions and has played for clubs in Mexico, Spain, Italy, Portugal, and other countries. In addition, he has been playing football professionally since 2006.

Childhood, Early Life, and Education

Mexican Footballer, Miguel Layun was born in Cordoba, Veracruz, Mexico. He was born to his parents Miguel Layn Sr. and  Maribel Prado.

He has two sisters named Mariana Layn and Marifer Layn. Marianna is a ballet dancer who received a bronze medal in the International Ballet Competition.

Football Career

Veracruz

Layn made his professional debut at Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz, his home state, in 2006.

In 2007, he made his Primera Division debut against another local club, Necaxa, in the Clausura 2007 season.

He remained a member of the Veracruz club until the end of 2009. Veracruz was eventually demoted to the second level.

Layn scored his ultimate aim for Veracruz against Tampico Madero on February 25, 2009.

Atalanta

He transferred from his former club, Veracruz, for a large sum of €625,000 after a successful trial with the Italian Club Atalanta. With this transfer, he became Mexico’s lone player to have appeared in Series A.

Layn came in as a substitute for Jamie Valdes in Atalanta’s league match against Chievo at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi in Verona.

His second game was against his former club, Cagliari, as a 66th-minute substitute for Nicola Madonna.

They were defeated 3-0. Miguel’s only appearances that season came in just two games.

America

Layn was moved to Club América for the Clausura 2010 competition in 2010. He was the club’s second deal during the winter transfer window.

He scored his first goal for América in the first half of the quarter-final match against Toluca in May 2010. At the Estadio Azteca, the game concluded in a 2-2 tie.

Layn earned his first-ever championship in the Clausura 2013 final, scoring the winning penalty shoot-out goal against Cruz Azul.

In addition, he came on as a substitute for Diego Reyes in the first half.

Watford

Layn signed a five-year contract with La Liga Club Granada. He was loaned out to another team, Watford of the English Championship, for the duration of the season.

Later, he signed a four-year contract with Watford and was awarded the desired number 7 shirt. He made his championship debut the day after his signing was announced. He played the entire 90 minutes, but Huddersfield Town defeated him 3-2.

Layun appeared in 17 games for Watford this season. Layun was given the opportunity to play in the Premier League when the team was promoted to the top flight that season.

He played a 2 – 2 tie against Everton at Goodison Park.

Porto

Miguel Layn joined Porto on a one-year contract with a €6 million buyout option.

On September 12, 2015, he made his club debut, and his team won 3 – 1 over Maccabi Tel Aviv in the Champions League.

Four days after his debut against Vitoria Setubal, he scored his first goal for the club. Layn was later permanently signed for the remainder of 2016, with a €6 million payment to be made in two payments.

Sevilla

Layn joined the Spanish La Liga Club Sevilla in early 2017 and stayed for the full 2017-18 season. The lending agreement also includes a buyback option.

Villareal

Layn signed a three-year contract with Villareal in July 2018. He made his debut for this squad in the 75th minute as a substitute for Santi Carzola against Girona.

International Career

Miguel Layn was selected for the national team for the first time in 2013. Jose Manuel de la Torre, the national coach, approached him following his outstanding exploits for Club América in the Clausura Tournaments.

Notably, Miguel Layn was a member of the Mexican national team that competed in the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup in the United States of America.

He made his international debut against Canada at CenturyLink Field in Seattle.

Layn played the whole 90-minute game and won it, however, he was eliminated from the league after losing in the semi-finals.

He also appeared in the past two World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Costa Rica.

The new Mexico coach, Miguel Herrera, who was also the coach of Club América, also asked him to play in the first leg.

Miguel also had two assists in a triumph against Estadio Azteca.

Similarly, he was a member of the 23-man team for the 2014 World Cup, where he featured in all three group matches until the Netherlands eliminated Mexico.

He was also a member of Mexico’s roster for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia. Layn appeared in all four of Mexico’s matches.
