Ice Hockey Career
Boston Bruins
Milbury appeared in five games with the Boston Bruins, the top farm team for the Boston Braves, after completing his collegiate hockey career in 1974. He later signed a free-agent deal with the Boston Bruins on November 5, 1974.
He played with the Rochester Americans, a brand-new American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate of the Boston Bruins, for the two seasons after that. Michael played in eleven of the Bruins’ twelve Stanley Cup playoff games after being promoted in the closing weeks of the 1975–76 season.
Mike was known for his aggressive play, and he got along well with other aggressive players like Terry O’Reilly, John Wensink, and Stan Jonathan.
Milbury also played a significant role in the Bruins’ two consecutive appearances in the Stanley Cup Final. The Montreal Canadiens defeated the Boston Bruins in four and then six games in each of these championship encounters, which took place in 1977 and 1978, respectively.
In the other six seasons, he accrued more than 100 penalty minutes. He was assessed 222 and 216 penalty minutes in 1981 and 1983, respectively.
In the NHL Players’ Association, he represented his team and was renowned for his outspoken views.
Coaching Career
Following his appointment as head coach for the 1989–1990 season, Milbury led the Boston Bruins to the President’s Trophy and a spot in the Stanley Cup Finals. Later, Sporting News honored him Executive of the Year.
For the 1991 All-Star Game, Milbury opted to employ Chris Nilan as the enforcer and Brian Skrudland as the checker rather than stars like Kirk Muller and Guy Lafleur.
But both of his selections had to sit out the contest due to injury. Because of this particular occurrence, the NHL’s board of governors changed their stance and said that moving ahead, the committee would choose the teams.
Boston College
On March 30, 1994, it was revealed that Mike Milbury had taken over as head coach at Boston College in place of Steve Cedorchuk.
Then, on June 2, 1994, Mike revealed that he and the college’s athletics department had some “philosophical concerns” during a press conference. Milbury continued by announcing his resignation after only one game of coaching.
Following this incident, Boston College hired Jerry York, a famed coach who was at the time Bowling Green University’s head coach, to take over as their head coach. Mike Milbury afterward agreed to work as a television analyst.
New York Islanders
When Mike Milbury was appointed as the head coach of the New York Islanders in 1995 and within three months also became their general manager, Rick Bowness took over as that team’s head coach.
Milbury has received criticism for his poor decisions. The careers of many of the young players he dealt with, however, were more fruitful than the ones he received.
Milbury assumed a job as senior vice president of Charles Wang‘s sports business after resigning from his post as the general manager of the New York Islanders in June 2006.
