The stage name of American actress and stand-up comedian Monique Angela Hicks is Mo’Nique.

She is the recipient of a Golden Globe Award, an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, and a Screen Actors Guild Award.

She originally gained notoriety for her work as a member of The Queens of Comedy, where she made her stand-up comedy debut.

Mo’Nique | Early Life, Family, and Education

On December 11, 1967, in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland, father Steven Imes, Jr., a drug counselor, and mother Alice Imes, an engineer, gave birth to their daughter Mo’Nique. She is the youngest of four kids.

Mo’Nique entered Morgan State University in 1985 after completing her high school studies at Milford Mill High School in Baltimore County. In 1987, she received her diploma from the Maryland Broadcasting Institute.

Mo’Nique | Career

Early Career

In the UPN television series The Parkers, Mo’Nique portrayed Nicole “Nikki” Parker from 1999 until 2004. In addition to Russell Simmons’ Def Comedy Jam, Showtime at the Apollo, and Thank God You’re Here, she also performed on a variety of prominent stand-up programs.

Mo’Nique co-starred in Tony Scott’s tense 2005 picture Domino alongside Mickey Rourke and Keira Knightley. In 2006, Mo’Nique was selected to portray the lead part in the comedy Phat Girlz, which centers on a teenage fashion designer who is looking for love and acceptance.

The Vagina Monologues and Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School

Mo’Nique gave her first performance of The Vagina Monologues, which earned Eve Ensler an Obie Award, in March 2002. She also released the cookbook Skinny Cooks Can’t Be Trusted in 2006. In Washington, D.C., Mo’nique took part in the George Wilborn and WHUR radio program. She was also named the hostess of Showtime at the Apollo.

She hosted and oversaw the production of Mo’Nique’s Fat Chance, a plus-size women’s beauty pageant on the Oxygen cable network. In the first season of Flavor of Love Girls: Charm School, which she hosted on VH1, Saaphyri was named the winner.

After hosting the 2003 and 2004 BET Awards, she was announced as the host for the 2007 BET Awards. She received positive feedback when she performed Beyoncé’s single “Crazy in Love” as the show’s opening number in July 2004.

Monique has acted in the movies Beerfest, Three Strikes, Two Can Play That Game, Half Past Dead, Soul Plane, and Half Past Dead. She lent her voice to a role in Garfield: The Movie, but she was not in the final product. In 2009’s Precious, directed by Lee Daniels, Mo’Nique had an appearance.

In 2014, Mo’Nique also starred as Claire Rousseau in Patrik-Ian Polk’s drama film Blackbird. She was cast as Ma Rainey in the biographical film Bessie in 2015, and she received critical acclaim for the role. Mo’Nique was cast in Lee Daniels’ horror/thriller The Deliverance in 2022, alongside Andra Day, Omar Epps, Miss Lawrence, and Tasha Smith.

She received an Academy Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in “Precious” in 2010.

Mo’Nique also received a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, a BAFTA Award, an African-American Film Critics Association Award, a BET Award, and two Gold Derby Awards for her performance (Supporting Actress and Supporting Actress of the Decade).

Real State

Mo’Nique used to pay $22,000 per month to rent a 7,292-square-foot home in Roswell, Georgia, but her landlords sued her in 2011 after she allegedly breached her rental agreement and owed them $370,000.

Mo’Nique filed a countersuit, claiming that the house smelled like dog feces and urine, had a clogged septic tank, and had mold. The lawsuits settled in 2012 for an undisclosed sum.

Personal Life and Relationships

Mo’Nique is a Married Woman. She married Sidney on May 20, 2006, and the couple has an open marriage, according to her. She gave birth to twin sons, David and Jonathan, on October 3, 2005.

On Christmas Day 1997, Mo’Nique married Mark Jackson. Before divorcing in April 2001, they had a son, Shalon, and adopted another son, Mark Jr.
