Richard Tyler Blevins, also known as Ninja, is an American Twitch streamer, YouTuber, and professional gamer. Blevins started streaming after joining many esports teams to compete in Halo 3 and rapidly gained popularity after beginning to play Fortnite Battle Royale in late 2017.

Ninja | Early Life, Education, and Family

On June 5, 1991, Richard Tyler Blevins, best known by his stage name Tyler Blevins, was born in Detroit, Michigan. With his mother Cynthia, father Chuck, and elder brothers John and Chris, he grew up in Grayslake, Illinois.

Chuck introduced Tyler to video games while he was a small child, and both of his parents are of Welsh origin. Blevins played soccer while going to Grayslake Central High School and working at Noodles & Company. While a student at Wisconsin’s Silver Lake College, he started playing video games competitively, joining groups for professional gamers, and streaming his games live.

Early Career

Beginning with “Halo 3,” Blevins began playing video games professionally. He began broadcasting in 2011 and has since represented teams including Team Liquid, Cloud 9, and Renegades in “H1Z1” and “Player Unknown’s Battlegrounds” (“PUBG”). He began playing “Halo,” and “PUBG” with Luminosity Gaming in 2017.

Later that year, the team won the “PUBG” Gamescom Invitational Squads category. 635,000 people watched the live video of him playing “Fortnite” alongside Drake, Travis Scott, and Juju Smith-Schuster in March 2018, shattering the previous record for the most viewers ever on a single Twitch channel.

Due to this, Epic Games decided to pair gamers with famous people at E3 2018, and Ninja and his teammate, electronic artist Marshmello, won the “Fortnite Battle Royale” competition. When 667,000 people tuned in to see Blevins stream during Ninja Vegas 2018, he broke his previous Twitch record.

In 2016, he received a 48-hour suspension from Twitch for disclosing a donor’s address who had left a racist donation message and screen name. He participated in a “Fortnite Battle Royale” Esports competition in April 2018, and for each game he won, he gave $2,500 to the Alzheimer’s Association. In addition to raising $340,000 during the #Clips4Kids event that month, Ninja also gave $1 million to charity in 2018 after winning the “Fortnite” Pro-Am competition. Tyler and Jessica contributed $150,000 to Feeding America during the 2020 Coronavirus pandemic.
