Starting of Career in Football
As a running back, he was chosen for the Junior College All-American team. When voting for the 1967 Heisman Trophy as a junior, UCLA quarterback Gary Beban beat out Simpson for second place.
Simpson’s 64-yard touchdown run, the extra point, and the score that broke the tie all contributed to the final score of 21-20. In 1968, Simpson won the Heisman Trophy, the Maxwell Award, and the Walter Camp Award with 1,709 rushing yards and 22 touchdowns.
Simpson’s NFL Journey
Following a 1-12-1 season in 1968, the Buffalo Bills of the AFL were selected first in the 1969 AFL-NFL Common Draft. Although he was granted his request, Simpson sought the then-highest salary in professional sports history: $650,000 distributed over five years.
Simpson and Ralph Wilson, the owner of the Buffalo Bills, fought as a result. He vowed to give up football and transition into acting. Simpson entered the NFL with high expectations, but he struggled in his first three seasons, averaging only 622 yards annually.
In 1972, Simpson ran for more than 1,000 yards for the first time in his career, finishing with a league-high 1,251 yards. With 2,003 total running yards and 12 touchdowns, Simpson became the first player to break the coveted 2,000-yard rushing barrier in 1973.
Simpson accumulated more than 1,000 rushing yards each of the following three seasons. In a divisional game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Simpson racked up 49 yards on 15 attempts and caught a touchdown, but the Buffalo Bills lost 32-14.
Simpson won the rushing title once more in 1975 after accumulating 1,817 yards and 16 touchdowns on the ground. Simpson only played in seven games in 1977 due to an injury that ended his regular season early.

O. J. Simpson worked as an analyst for The NFL and NBC’s Monday Night Football in addition to his acting career. He also appeared in the audience and hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live during the second season.
Simpson appeared in Juiced, a hidden-camera prank program with an improv emphasis, in 2006. He would play practical jokes on average people while secretly taking pictures of them and exclaiming, “You’ve been Juiced!” after each ruse. Each performance started with topless strippers performing around Simpson, who was decked out in a pimp outfit. It was less typical.
