At the 2016 Summer Olympics, the Ukrainian gymnast won the gold medal in the men’s parallel bars event. He also took home a silver in the individual all-around competition that year.

Vernyayev won the 2012 World Artistic Championship’s title in men’s parallel bars as well.

About Oleg Vernyayev |  Family and Education

Oleg Vernyayev was born on September 29, 1993, in the Ukrainian city of Donetsk. Tetiana Vernyayev and Yuri Vernyayev are his parents. He doesn’t have any siblings.

To enhance his education, Oleg also went to the Donetsk State Institute of Health, Physical Education, and Sport. Then he relocated from his hometown to Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital.

Gennady Sartynsky provided comparable direction and mentoring to Vernyayev.

The Evolution of Gymnastics

Oleg’s mother, Tetiana, also dabbled in gymnastics for a short while. She achieved level one in artistic gymnastics because of her prowess.

She informed the family about the sport and its significance as a result. Similar to this, Oleg’s parents enrolled him in a gymnastics program.

They might have been inspired by Tetiana’s pleasure in the activity, but a humorous event prompted them to move forward so quickly.

Oleg had too much energy while he was in kindergarten. He and a companion greatly irritated the teachers.

They should take up gymnastics, the teacher advised their parents so that they don’t have to use up so much energy at school.

To others, it might sound obnoxious or even amusing, but this is how Oleg first became interested in gymnastics.

Dedicated Parents

Tetiana and Yuri have both given their only child’s gymnastics profession their fullest support.

Additionally, Oleg recalls his father encouraging him all the time. He is appreciative of his mother’s commitment to him and his desire of playing sports.

Oleg sees his role in gymnastics as teamwork, as three of them moved together while emulating one another.

Almost all of the major events in which he competes are attended by his parents. Even now!

Furthermore, They haven’t missed many of the European or World Championships.

Professional Life and Career

Oleg competed in the men’s vault final at the 2011 Summer Universiade. He finished sixth with a score of 15.262 there.

In the men’s team final, Ukraine’s team, which the young gymnasts competed for, came in fifth place.

At the 2011 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships, Oleg also competed in the team all-around competition alongside Nikolai Kuksenkov, Oleg Stepko, Vitaliy Nakonechnyi, Roman Zozula, and Igor. The team placed fifth.

Oleg also received scores of 14.461, 13.866, 14.833, and 13.800 in the pommel horse, vault, floor, and parallel bars, respectively.

Then, with a score of 88.132, he participated in the 2012 American Cup and finished sixth.

European and national championships

The Ukrainian also placed fifth in the final team at the 2012 European Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

Similar to this, he won the Ukrainian Championships’ all-around final with a total of 90.300 points.

In 2012, he additionally won the Ukrainian National Championships. Additionally, he won the silver medal at the 2013 American Cup.

At the 2013 European Championships for men’s artistic individual all-around, Vernyayev later won the bronze medal.

At the 2013 Summer Universidad, he also guided the Ukrainian team to a second-place result in the team competition.

2014 and Beyond

At the 2014 World Championships in Nanning, he won gold in the parallel bars competition as well.

Vernyayev won the artistic individual all-around competition at the 2015 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships with a score of 89.582.

He later won the parallel bars competition with a score of 15.866.

Vernyayev also took home gold in the vault competition at the 2016 European Championships. Throughout the tournament, he also took home a silver medal on the parallel bars.

Gain More Notoriety

He took home two gold medals from the 2017 European Championships in the artistic solo all-around and parallel bars. He also took home a bronze in the vault.

At the 2017 Taipei Summer Universiade, Vernyayev also took home the gold medal for artistic individual all-around.

Similarly,  he won three silver medals—one on vault and two more on pommel horse—including one with his team. For the ring, he also received a bronze medal.

Vernyayev participated in the Olympics twice, once in London in 2012 and once in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. He would have participated in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics if he hadn’t been banned.

London in 2012

At the 2012 Summer Olympics, the Ukrainian took part in the men’s all-around artistic team competition. He also received 88.964 and finished 13th in the qualifying round.

But that year, Ukraine was unable to reserve any medals. With a score of 271.526, his team placed 13th, only 0.2 points short of the bronze medal.

Ukraine had also been given a bronze medal and third place in the beginning. However, following an appeal of a pommel horse verdict, Japan received an additional 0.7 points.

They were consequently promoted from fourth to second place.

Similarly, Ukraine thereby forfeited its sole medal. Vernyayev placed 11th in the individual all-around final with a score of 88.931.

Rio de Janeiro, 2016

At the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics, Vernyayev took home two medals. With a score of 92.266, he won the silver medal in the artistic men’s individual all-around.

Additionally, his deficit to gold medallist Kohei Uchimura was just 0.099 points.

In the men’s parallel bars competition, he also took home a gold medal. He had a 16.041 point total.

He placed eighth on the horizontal bar and pommel horse, and fifth in the final vault competition.

Additionally, Vernyayev helped Ukraine win its first Olympic gymnastics gold since 2004.

Ban |Oleg Vernyayev

Vernyayev has been disqualified from the Olympics in Paris in 2024 as well as the Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

This is because he was charged with using the medication “meldonium.” The prohibition was put into place in November 2020.

Similarly, Meldonium boosted blood flow, which increased the athlete’s ability to expend energy. Additionally, the chemical had been prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency since 2016.

Moreover, It comes as a surprise to Vernyayev and his supporters that he won’t be defending his gold medal from Rio in 2020.

A four-year ban was also imposed on him by the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation (GEF) after he revealed on Instagram that he tested positive for meldonium.

He admitted in his Instagram post that he had no idea how the chemical entered his body. It took place when he was only doing light training and no important tournaments were taking place.
