American media mogul, actress, talk show host, television producer, and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey is best known for her talk show, “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” which aired for 25 seasons and was the highest-rated program of its kind in history.

Oprah Winfrey | Early Life, Family, and Education

On January 29, 1954, Orpah Gail Winfrey was born I n Kosciusko, Mississippi. Her mother, Vernita Lee, was a young housekeeper who wasn’t married. Her biological father, Vernon Winfrey, was in the military at the time Oprah was born. He then worked as a coal miner, barber, and city councilman. There have been rumors that Noah Robinson may have been her biological father.

When Oprah was a young child, her mother moved in with her grandmother. The family was notoriously obliged to dress Oprah for school in potato sacks because of the family’s extreme poverty.

Later, Oprah went to Milwaukee with her mother when she was six, where her mother took a job as a maid. A second daughter named Patricia was born to Oprah’s mother during this time. Patricia passed away at the age of 43 from cocaine consumption in 2003. Jeffrey, a brother born to father Vernon, was a different half-sibling who passed away from AIDS in 1989.

When Oprah was 12 years old, she was sent to Nashville to live with her father, Vernon. She left her home when she was 13 years old to escape the abuse she had to undergo. At the age of 14, she got pregnant, but the child didn’t make it.

Education

She was given permission to move to Nicolet High School in a posh suburb after succeeding in a special program at Lincoln High School in Milwaukee. She got into some trouble and went back to Nashville.

While attending East Nashville High School, she started to thrive. Oprah won the Miss Black Beauty Tennessee competition at the age of 17, and as a result, she was offered a part-time job as a news anchor at the local black radio station WVOL.

Further, she was awarded a scholarship to Tennessee State University, where she majored in communication. Oprah stopped attending college when she was 19 to focus solely on her media profession.

Media Career

Oprah was the first black female news anchor at WLAC-TV in Nashville. She was the station’s youngest anchor in history as well. At the age of 22, she was hired by Baltimore’s WJZ station to co-anchor the six o’clock news, a position that was in high demand.

She started serving as a co-host of the discussion show “People Are Talking” in August 1978. She was outperforming nationally syndicated Phil Donahue in the Baltimore market by 1980.

In 1984, Oprah obtained her own 30-minute morning talk program from ABC when the network saw her potential. Chicago-based King World Productions produced the program. In addition, King World created Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. In addition to the employment, a four-year, $1 million contract was provided.

The Oprah Winfrey Show

After AM Chicago made its debut on January 2, 1984, Oprah soon surpassed Phil Donahue to take the title of Chicago’s talk show with the highest ratings. The program was changed to The Oprah Winfrey Show on September 8, 1986, and it was given a full hour of airtime while being televised nationally and syndicated.

The program first focused exclusively on women’s issues but eventually added segments on charity, health, and spirituality. In the same year, she founded “Harpo Studios”.

Furthermore, her company, “Harpo Productions,” started putting “The Oprah Winfrey Show” on the air in 1989. Michael Jackson was the subject of an interview she conducted in 1993. The show rose to become the fourth most-watched event on American television and the most-watched interview of all time.

Other Projects

Oprah made several notable film appearances as an actress, including “The Color Purple” (1985), “Beloved” (1998), “The Butler”  (2013), and “Selma” (2014).

Numerous television programs, documentaries, and miniseries have been produced by her. She has also given voice for numerous animated characters.

Oprah has been on the board of directors for Weight Watchers since 2015. When she joined the business, she got ownership worth $43.5 million. That investment now has a worth of more than $400 million. 2019 saw her sign a multi-year deal to create shows for the electronics behemoth Apple.

Till now, Oprah has received two Academy Award nominations: one for Best Supporting Actress for “The Color Purple” and one for Best Picture for “Selma” as a producer. Additionally, in 2011, she received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Academy Award.

She has built up 160+ acres on Maui with investments totaling up to $60 million throughout the years.
