Oscar De La Hoya was conceived in East Los Angeles, California, on February 4, 1973. Similarly, the boxer attended Ford Boulevard Elementary School for his early education and his secondary schooling was at James A. Garfield High School.

After finishing high school, he focused entirely on boxing and followed his interest in it. He used to run through the streets of East Los Angeles as exercise. Additionally, at the early age of 15, won the National Junior Boxing Title and the National Golden Gloves championship.

His mother, Cecilia, was a seamstress, while his father, Joel Sr., worked as a warehouse clerk. In addition, boxing was a family tradition for him. Similar to him, Joel Sr.’s father had a brief professional boxing career in the United States in the 1960s and had a lightweight record.

In addition, De La Hoya grew up with his two siblings: Ceci De La Hoya, his younger sister, and Joel De La Hoya Jr., his elder brother. Not to mention that Oscar is of mixed ancestry and has American nationality.

1995-2000

On November 23, 1992, Oscar won his first professional fight via first-round TKO. Additionally, on May 6, 1995, he fought Rafael Ruelas, the IBF lightweight champion. Additionally, On June 17, 1996, he faced off against Mexican icon Julio Cesar Chavez, winning in the fourth round. This was one of his biggest battles.

Similarly, he defeated well-known Mexican boxer, Miguel Angel Gonzalez, in a fight in January 1997, according to the judges’ scores. Oscar overcame Julio Cesar Chavez in their rematch on September 8, 1998, taking the victory via an eighth-round TKO.

As a result, in 1999, following multiple successful defenses of his WBC welterweight championship. Also, he engaged in combat with IBM champion Felix Trinidad, breaking the previous record for a non-heavyweight battle. On February 26, 2000, he also defeated Derrell Coley in a WBC eliminator.

2001-2004

Early in 2001, Oscar engaged in combat with Arturo Gatti and won by TKO in the fifth round.

However, due to a hand injury, he postponed his battle until early 2002, instead of fighting for the entire 15 months.

On September 14, 2002, the boxer made a comeback and faced Fernando Vargas, earning his biggest career victory. Furthermore, he defeated WBO Middleweight Champion Felix Sturm on June 5, 2004, with a superb performance that saw him win seven rounds.

On September 18, 2004, he competed in a unification match staged in Las Vegas during the same year.

2005-2008

After a 20-month break, the fighter returned to the ring on May 6, 2006, taking on Ricardo Mayorga and knocking him out in the sixth round.

Oscar agreed to take on WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather in early 2007.

The battle was intense and ultimately led to the victory due to several intense matches. Then, on December 6, 2008, he engaged in combat in Las Vegas against Manny Pacquiao.

The contest, dubbed “The Dream Match,” ended after eight rounds when Pacquiao defeated De La Hoya by technical knockout.

Oscar’s career, which lasted for nearly 15 years, was tragically finished after that point. On April 14, 2009, the boxer made his retirement announcement.
