Oscar Gutiérrez, better known by his ring name Rey Mysterio, is an American professional wrestler who now works for WWE on the Raw brand.
Early Life, Family, and Education
Oscar Gutiérrez, better known as Rey Mysterio, was born on December 11, 1974, in the San Diego Metropolitan Area, in the city of Chula Vista, California, USA.
His parents are unknown, but his uncle Rey Misterio Sr., a well-known professional wrestler, and trainer is said to have coached him since he was a toddler.
He taught him not just wrestling talents, but also the high-flying acrobatics that helped him become El Lucha’ Dor, the WWE Division’s high-flying wrestler.
In the early stages of his wrestling career, he was known as Rey Mysterio Jr. after him. While wrestling under the ring name Colibri in Mexico in 1991, Mysterio was named “Most Improved Wrestler.”

Career
He made a breakthrough in his professional wrestling career after joining Asistencia Asesoria alongside Juventud Guerrera in 1992. He became well-known while working there after rising through the ranks and building a name for himself.
His breakthrough came in 1995 when he joined Paul Heyman’s Extreme Championship Wrestling (ECW). After a year, he joined World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and began facing Dean Malenko.
After losing to Kevin Nash and Scott Hall, he was forced to remove his mask, which was a dishonor to Mexico’s renowned Lucha Libre culture. The supporters didn’t like it either; it was met with a slew of criticism from the fanbase for how it was handled.
He rose to prominence after signing with World Wrestling Entertainment in 2002. When he joined WWE, he dropped the Jr. from his name. He began his WWE career under the ring name Rey Mysterio.

He consented to wear the mask at Vince McMahon’s request, much to the chagrin of Lucha Libre fans. On March 6, 2002, he won the WWE Cruiserweight Championship by defeating Tajiri and Jamie Noble.
On January 29, 2006, Rey Mysterio was drawn second in the Royal Rumble Match and defeated Randy Orton in nearly 60 minutes, earning him the main event at Wrestlemania.

Controversy
Several controversies have been blamed on Mysterio during the course of his over a decade-long career. “Sports Illustrated” released a report in 2007 that linked numerous WWE superstars to steroid and HGH use. Rey Mysterio was one of the wrestlers.
Due to his use of steroids and HGH, Mysterio defended himself, claiming that the drugs he used were prescribed for his knee and arm, and earned a 30-day ban from the WWE on August 27, 2009, for violating the health policy.
On April 26, 2012, he was suspended for the second time, for 60 days, for a second violation of the WWE Wellness policy.
His role in the killing of Perro Aguayo Jr. is the source of his most surprising controversy. The wrestler died inside the ring during a match involving Tiger, Mysterio, and Manik.
Rey Mysterio dropkicked Aguayo, killing him with a devastating punch. When it was discovered that Aguayo had stopped breathing, he was transported to the hospital, where heroic efforts were made to revive him. These attempts were futile, and he was declared dead on March 21, 2015.
