Paolo Maldini | Career

Maldini began his career with the Milan Youth team, and in the 1984–1985 campaign, he was named Coppa Italia Primavera champion.

Additionally, on February 19, 1989, Maldini made his 100th appearance in Serie A. The team also won back-to-back Intercontinental Cups and back-to-back European Super Cups in 1989 and 1990.

The Invincibles

Paolo remained a member of the club’s unbeaten Serie A squad that won the 1991–1992 season title and, in total, went unbeaten in 58 league games.

Team Captain

Paolo took over as Milan’s captain when players Franco Baresi and Mauro Tassotti retired following the 1996–1997 campaign.

They had a very challenging season, but thanks to Paolo’s outstanding coaching, the team won the Coppa Italia in 1998.

The team also triumphed in Serie A in 1998–1999 with Paolo serving as team captain.

Maldini also received the Premio Nazionale Carriera Esemplare “Gaetano Scirea” accolades in 2002 for his sportsmanship and career accomplishments.

Similarly, Paolo defeated Roma in the finals to claim his first Coppa Italia victory. Paolo served as the team’s first-ever captain as they captured the 2002–2003 Champions League.

On May 28, 2003, Paolo guided Milan to a victory over Juventus by helping them retain a clean sheet during the European Championship match.

On that day, exactly 40 years had passed since his father, who was the captain of Milan, had carried the European Cup trophy.

One of only three father-son teams who have achieved this feat to date is Paolo and his father.

Paolo also made Pele’s list of the top 125 active football players in 2004, which was known as the FIFA 100 list.

He received the Serie A Defender of the Year award from the Italian Football Awards in 2004.

Maldini as the Oldest Captain

After the squad defeated Lazio, Paolo began the following season as captain and with the 2004 Supercoppa Italiana trophy.

Paolo set a record for the oldest captain to win the Champions League when he did so at the age of 38. He was also the first captain of a European squad to win the FIFA World Cup.

Maldini also revealed his intentions to retire at the end of 2007 or beginning of 2008, saying he would do so “with no regrets.”

He did, however, postpone retirement by agreeing to a contract extension on June 6th, and he participated with AC Milan in the 2008–2009 campaign.

International Career

When his father called him to the Italian under-21 national team in 1986, Maldini began his career in international play. In 1986, on November 12th, he made his stage debut.

In 1990, when it was his first FIFA World Cup, he took part in all seven of Italy’s games. Paolo was a starter in the defense and contributed to Italy winning five straight games.

Moreover, Paolo had the same distinction as his father 32 years earlier, at the 1962 World Cup, when he was named to the “Team of the Tournament” in 1990.

Paolo, who had played for Italy the most times, ended his international football career at the age of 34.

On May 1st, 2016, Athletic Bilbao’s Paolo became the second player to receive the One Team Man Award from a Spanish professional football club.
