Theodore Jerome Popeye Jones, also called Popeye, was raised in Dresden, Tennessee, a city in the country of the United States. In his youth, he participated in baseball, basketball, and football.

He once admitted that baseball was his initial love, but something about basketball stuck with him.

Jones was given the name Popeye by his mother. She chose the cartoon character because Popeye was on TV when they returned home from the hospital after the baby was born.

In addition, the Murray State coach was fourth on the school’s all-time scoring chart with 2,057 points.

By becoming the first player to ever have more than 2000 points and 1000 rebounds, he created history at MSU.

The Houston Rockets selected Jones, an MSU basketball player, in the second round of the 1992 National Basketball Association draft.

He was quickly acquired by the Dallas Mavericks in a trade for Eric Riley.

Popeye played in Europe for one season before starting his NBA season. Also, Jones played with the Dallas Mavericks for three seasons before being traded to the Toronto Raptors.

Career as a Coach

After concluding his 11-year playing career in the NBA, basketball player Jones wants to pursue a career as a coach.

He consequently started working as a player development coach with the Dallas Mavericks. Jones spent three seasons as a player development coach before landing a legitimate coaching post with the Brooklyn Nets (2007–10).

In 2013, the Indiana Pacers also hired Jones as an assistant coach. He was employed by the Pacers from 2013 to 2020.

In November of last year, Jones finally received a job offer as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Popeye still seems excited about assisting other athletes in furthering their careers even after all these years.
