Rafer Alston is a popular American retired professional basketball player. He is well-known as a point guard for his legendary streetball past, where he was known as Skip 2 My Lou.

Early life, Childhood, and Education

He was born on 24th July 1976 in South Jamaica, Queens, New York, the USA to his mother, Geraldine Alston, and his father, Richard Alston.

He holds American nationality and belongs to a mixed (African-American) ethnic background and his star sign is Leo.

Although, his father was a drug addict while his mother is a nurse by profession. When he was young his parents were divorced. Meanwhile, they got back together once again after the divorce.

Talking about his professional career, Rafer began his professional career as a basketball player.

Early Career

Rafer Alston played college basketball for three seasons: one each at Ventura College (1994–95), Fresno City College (1996–97), and Fresno State (1997–98). After that, he was red-shirted at Fresno City College for the 1995–96 season.

Professional Career

Alston started his professional career by entering the 1998 NBA Draft. He was selected by Milwaukee Bucks in the second round as the 39th pick overall.  After that, Alston was traded to the Toronto Raptors in 2003.

After the Raptors, Alston emerged as a starter for the Miami Heat in 2004. He scored averaging 12 points and 4 assists on a young Miami team, led by rookie guard Dwyane Wade.

He hit a game-winning shot in overtime with 0.5 seconds against the Dallas Mavericks.

Although, he signed a multi-year deal with the Toronto Raptors in the summer of 2004. Later on, Alston was traded to the Houston Rockets for guard Mike James on 4th October 2005.

Alston averaged 13.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 5.4 assists, and 1.6 steals per game during the 2006–07 season.

Additionally, he finished the season ninth in steals among all NBA players, fourth in three-pointers made, and 23rd in assists.

Alston suspended for two games without pay for his role in a fight after a non-call foul with Matt Barnes and Steve Nash on 12th November 2008. 

Later on, Alston was traded to the Orlando Magic in a three-way deal on 19th February 2009. He helped the Orlando Magic defeat the Philadelphia 76ers 4–2 in the first round of the NBA Playoffs on 30th April 2009.

Likewise, Alston averaged 10.6 points, 3.0 assists, and 2.2 rebounds in the Finals. After that, Alston played for the New Jersey Nets in 2009.

More About His Career

Although, he was traded to the New Jersey Nets along with Tony Battie and Courtney Lee in exchange for Vince Carter and Ryan Anderson on 25th June 2009.

Meanwhile, he had his first triple-double as a member of the New Jersey Nets in 2009–2010.

Later on, he returned to Miami in 2010. On 6th March 2010, he was suspended for missing practice and a game. His final NBA game was played on 2nd March 2010 in a 110 – 106 win over the Golden State Warriors. 

Alston signed with the Zhejiang Lions in the CBA for the remainder of the season on 26th January 2011. He played 8 games for the Lions and averaged 19.2 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 3.4 assists.

Furthermore, he signed with the Los Angeles D-Fenders of the NBA D-League in 2012.

Currently, he is a basketball scout for the Minnesota Timberwolves. Moreover, in one of the interviews he said:

“Growing up I always studied basketball. I always was watching the game,” Alston said regarding basketball scout.
