Professional Life and Career

At Joliet Junior College, when the squad won the NJCAA national championship, Rob recorded seven sacks and 36 tackles.

Rob was also named to the Third Team NJCAA All-America during his second year of college.

Additionally, despite being a reserve, Rob Ninkovich finished second in the Big Ten Conference that year after switching to Purdue in 2004.

Similar to that, Rob was named to the second team for the Big Ten during his senior season.

Additionally, by recording four sacks against the Indiana Hoosiers for the second consecutive season, he achieved two of the three individual four-sack milestones in school history.

St. Louis Saints

The New Orleans Saints selected Ninkovich with the 135th overall choice in the fifth round of the 2006 NFL Draft.

Rob and the Saints reached a three-year, $1.22 million contract on July 18, 2006.

After Rob finished the 2006 preseason with three sacks, the head coach, Sean Payton, named him the backup defensive end to Charles Grant and Will Smith for the regular season.

Rob was playing against the Atlanta Falcons when he tore a ligament in his knee. To restore the torn ligament, he required surgery.

Rob was also released by the Saints as a consequence of the team’s final roster cuts on September 6, 2007.

Florida Dolphins

On September 7th, 2007, the Miami Dolphins claimed Rob off waivers, and on September 16th, he made his NFL debut.

Rob changed positions with the team’s new head coach, moving to outside linebacker. The 2008 preseason saw a team-high two sacks from Ninkovich and Randy Starks.

On September 3, 2008, the Dolphins claimed Rob off waivers; however, on August 31, 2008, they released him and added him to the practice squad.

On November 15, 2008, the Dolphins added Rob to the active roster. He was released on November 20, 2008, to make place for linebacker Erik Walden, and then he was added back to the practice squad.

Massachusetts Patriots

The New England Patriots agreed to a one-year, $535,000 deal with Rob on August 2nd, 2009.

He was included on the Patriots’ 53-man roster, and in Week 5’s contest with the Denver Broncos, he registered his first NFL sack.

In addition, Ninkovich consented to a contract extension on November 6, 2009, which would have run through the 2011 season.

Season of 2016

During training camp for the 2016 campaign, Rob tore his triceps, and it was anticipated that he would be out of play for a few weeks.

He was given a four-game suspension on September 2, 2016, for using an illegal substance.

Similar to that, on September 5th, 2016, the Patriots and Ninkovich once more reached an agreement on a one-year contract extension through the 2017 season.

Rob was a member of the New England Patriots team that won Super Bowl LI on February 5, 2017. The Patriots overcame the Atlanta Falcons in overtime thanks in part to two tackles by Ninkovich.

According to Rob in a post-game interview with WBZ Sports, the team supposedly “broke down” in the locker room at halftime, prompting the choice to play “one heck of a 30-minute half.”

In the third quarter, the New England Patriots were down by a score of 2-28 against the Atlanta Falcons, but they came back to win by a score of 34-28.

It was a first for the sport when the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl game in overtime.

Retirement | Rob Ninkovich

Rob, who played in the NFL for eleven seasons, announced his retirement on July 30, 2017.

Although there were rumors that he would return to the field, Ninkovich indicated he was happy with his decision and would not be doing so.

On the other hand, Ninkovich announced in July 2019 that, barely two years after his retirement, he would be joining ESPN as an NFL pundit.

Many people were troubled by the direction his examination of Baker Mayfield took in his work.

The Browns lost the game, which Rob started. Mayfield had poor success. The absence of the Browns’ top four defensemen prevented Mayfield from receiving much help.
