The father of Rudy Gobert, Rudy Bourgarel, played basketball at Marist College from 1985 to 1988.

There, Bourgarel played alongside Rik Smits, the future No. 2 overall choice in the 1988 draft, who spent his entire 12-year career with the Indiana Pacers.

As a starter in 198788 alongside Smits, the 7-foot Bourgarel averaged 10.7 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game.

While Bourgarel spent ten years playing professionally in Europe, he was never selected.

Gobert asserted that his father, who appeared in the movie “Coming to America,” never pressured him to play basketball.

Eventually, his victory made history in the NBA by making him the first foreign player to win four straight defensive players of the year accolades.

On June 11, Gobert recorded a postseason career-high with 20 rebounds in a Game 2 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.
