Russ Howard

Olympic champion curler is well-known for his gruff voice, he has competed in the Brier 14 times and twice won the competition. In 1987 and 1993, he took home gold medals at the World Curling Championships.

Early Life, and Family

Russ Howard, a Canadian curler and gold champion at the Olympics, was born on February 19, 1956, in Midland, Canada. He was born to his parents Bill Howard and Barbara Howard.

Russ earned an economics degree from the University of West England.

His brother Glenn Howard is a well-known curler who has participated in thirteen Brier competitions, claimed three Brier victories, captured three world championships in 1987, 1993, and 2007, and amassed eight grand slam victories.

Likewise, Glenn’s daughter Carly Howard and son Scott Howard both played curling and participated in a number of junior provincial competitions.

Career 

Russ Howard, known for his gravelly voice, served as the team’s Skip (Captain) and guided them to victory at the Brier. Brier is the name of the provincial championship for men’s curling in Canada.

From 2000 through 2019, Howard played curling in Moncton, New Brunswick, representing the province and winning six more provincial championships as a Skip.

Along with winning the World Championships in 1987 and 1993, he also won the Canadian national championships in 1987 and 1993.

Moreover, in 2000, when he placed second, he came the closest to winning a national championship during the height of his career.

Olympic Win 

However, the Canadian-born athlete did compete on Brad Gushue’s team in the 2005 Canadian Olympic Trials.

The team won the match despite Gushue continuing to toss the final rocks, which Skip or Captain often threw, and Howard throwing the second.

He was able to compete and represent Canada at the Turin Winter Olympics in 2006 because to it. They defeated Finland in a match 10-4 to win the gold medal.
