American-born Jamaican professional basketball player Ryan Rupert Reid plays for the Kanazawa Samuraiz in the Japanese B.League. Reid represented the Florida State Seminoles in collegiate basketball.
Early Life, Family & Education
Ryan Rupert Reid, better known as Ryan Reid, was born on October 30, 1986, in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida, USA. Kenneth and Jasmine Mullings, both from Florida, raised him.
There isn’t much information about his parents online, so it’s unclear why Ryan has the surname Reid while his parents have the surname Mullings.
Reid grew up in Lauderdale Lakes and had a simple childhood. His parents did not have college degrees, so they had to work low-wage jobs to make ends meet. They did, however, always make sure Ryan was happy.
Furthermore, they enrolled him in a public school near their Florida home for his early education. They wished for their child to have a good education and a prosperous future with high-paying jobs so that he would not end up like them.
Reid was aware of his parents’ hardships and aspired to make them proud one day, but he struggled in school.
Unlike in school, he was always upbeat while participating in sports, especially basketball. His tall stature and athletic physique may have contributed to his interest in extracurricular activities.
He enrolled at Florida State University (FSU) in 2006 after graduating from Boyd Anderson School. In 2010, he graduated from FSU with a bachelor’s degree in social sciences.
Career History
High School Career
Ryan Reid attended Boyd H. Anderson High School in his hometown and played high school basketball there. In addition, he was a member of the Tallahassee Wildcats, which competed in AAU tournaments.
Reid was taller than most of his teammates, so he started most games as a center. During his professional career, he became proficient in the power forward position and also played in the forward positions.
His freshman season was not particularly impressive. However, his school’s head coach believed he was capable of turning the tables. He began catching up from his sophomore season, as expected.
In the previous three seasons, he was one of his school’s leading scorers and rebounders in various tournaments. Reid finished his senior year with 18.5 points and 13.0 rebounds per game on average.
College Career
Reid chose Florida State University in Tallahassee over Pittsburgh, Georgia Tech, Houston, and other universities in 2006 because it was closer to his home. Another reason was that he had heard so much about Seminoles head coach Leonard Hamilton.
His first season with the Seminoles was a disaster. He never started the game, but he appeared in all 35 games that season, averaging 2.9 points and 3.2 rebounds per game.
Ryan saw more playing time as a sophomore, but his performance did not improve significantly. In his second season, he averaged 5.0 rebounds per game but only 5.6 points per game.
His previous two seasons were also dreadful. Despite the fact that he graduated in 2010 and was thus automatically eligible for the NBA draft, no one believed he would make it to the league based on his stats.

Professional Career
Surprisingly, the Indiana Pacers selected Ryan as the 57th pick in the second round of the 2010 NBA draft. They didn’t want to keep him any longer, so they quickly sold the draft rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Thunder’s management believed Ryan Reid possessed exceptional defensive skills that would be useful to the Thunder in the upcoming season. So they put him through his paces in the 2010 Orlando Summer League.

Reid appeared in four games, averaging 8.3 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Unfortunately, the Thunder changed their minds and released him before he had even played a single game.
Ryan, on the other hand, was a member of the Tulsa 66ers in the 2010-11 NBA G League, where he appeared in 48 games and averaged 5.8 rebounds per game.
He joined the French club Chorale Roanne in 2012 and spent two seasons in the LNB Pro A.
After a season with SLUC Nancy in the French league, Ryan signed with the Japanese club Niigata Albirex BB in the Japanese B League for the 2015-16 season. Reid also made a brief appearance in the NBL Canada in 2018.

Similarly, he spent many years playing in various top-tier and second-tier leagues in Puerto Rico, Japan, and elsewhere. So he made a good living there as well. Aside from that, he briefly played in the NBA G League, where his annual salary was around $20k.
Personal Life
Ryan was never in the spotlight during his professional career because he was unable to stay in the NBA. As a result, he did not gain as many fans as he desired. He was, however, quite popular in high school.
So we reasoned that people who remember him from his early days might be curious about his personal life. However, he has not revealed anything about his personal life in public.
