Amateur

Ryan began his professional hockey career in the Greater Toronto Hockey League (GTHL).

He spent a year playing for the Toronto Marlboros, making 76 appearances, scoring 85 goals, 164 points, and providing 79 assists.

Due to his outstanding performances, Strome was selected by the Barrie Colts with the eighth overall pick in the Ontario Hockey League Draft.

But due to his lackluster performances for the Colts, he was traded a year later to the Niagara IceDogs.

The 27-year-old remained with the IceDogs for the following four seasons, during which they made the playoffs each time.

Ryan played in 235 games for the Niagara IceDogs, appearing in 235 of them, tallying 115 goals, 323 points, and 207 assists.

The native of Ontario was also chosen for the 2011 Second All-Star Team and was named OHL Player of the Month in January.

Professional Career

After playing for the IceDogs for two seasons, Strome qualified for the National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft.

He was chosen by the New York Islanders in the first round of the 2011 NHL Draft, fifth overall. He was also chosen by Amur Khabarovsk of the Kontinental Hockey League in the same year.

After being chosen, Strome played one more season with the IceDogs before joining the Islanders’ American Hockey League (AHL) minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, for the 2012–13 campaign.

On December 11, 2013, midway through the following season, the Islanders selected him after putting Pierre-Marc Bouchard on waivers to make room on their roster.

In the first 23 games of the season, he had the most points in the AHL.On January 6, 2014, Strome scored his first NHL goal against Kari Lehtonen of the Dallas Stars.

Strome spent the 2014–15 season with the New York Islanders. In exchange for forwarding Jordan Eberle, Strome was traded by the Islanders to the Edmonton Oilers on June 22, 2017.

In his inaugural campaign with the Oilers in 2017–18, Strome played in all 82 games, recording 13 goals and 21 assists for a total of 34 points.

Strome signed a two-year, $6.2 million extension with the Oilers on July 6, 2018, while still a restricted free agent.

On November 16, 2018, the Oilers decided to deal forward Ryan Spooner to the New York Rangers in exchange for Strome.

On February 20, 2021, Strome became the first player in NHL history to amass at least 100 points with both the Islanders and Rangers franchises.

Strome left the Rangers organization after his fourth season there and was signed by the Anaheim Ducks to a five-year, $25 million deal on July 13, 2022.

International Career

Ryan has participated in three different tournaments for Canada’s youth-level teams, despite having never played for the senior team of the Canadian national team.
