After being chosen, Strome played one more season with the IceDogs before joining the Islanders’ American Hockey League (AHL) minor league affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, for the 2012–13 campaign.
On December 11, 2013, midway through the following season, the Islanders selected him after putting Pierre-Marc Bouchard on waivers to make room on their roster.
In the first 23 games of the season, he had the most points in the AHL.On January 6, 2014, Strome scored his first NHL goal against Kari Lehtonen of the Dallas Stars.
Strome spent the 2014–15 season with the New York Islanders. In exchange for forwarding Jordan Eberle, Strome was traded by the Islanders to the Edmonton Oilers on June 22, 2017.
In his inaugural campaign with the Oilers in 2017–18, Strome played in all 82 games, recording 13 goals and 21 assists for a total of 34 points.

Strome signed a two-year, $6.2 million extension with the Oilers on July 6, 2018, while still a restricted free agent.
