Saina Nehwal is an Indian professional badminton player. Although she was ranked second in the world in 2009, it wasn’t until 2015 that she was ranked first.

Early Life & Family

Saina Nehwal, India’s pride, was born on March 17, 1990, in Hisar, Haryana. Harvir Singh Nehwal and Usha Rani Nehwal had her as their younger daughter.

Nehwal’s father holds a Ph.D. in agricultural science and was later transferred to Hyderabad.

Nehwal began playing badminton because she couldn’t socialize with other children due to the language barrier.

She was eight years old at the time. For many years, both of her parents played badminton. Her mother was a Haryana state player, and her father was a university player.

Moreover, Nehwal accompanied her mother to a local Haryana club when she was a child.

Nehwal aspired to fulfill her mother’s ambition of becoming a national badminton player. Her father even used his provident fund to help her provide good training for Nehwal.

Her older sister, Chandranshu Nehwal, was a volleyball player who later became a model. Prior to badminton, Nehwal was a brown belt in karate as a child.

Nehwal mentions that her grandmother was dissatisfied with her birth and did not visit her for several months afterward.

Professional Life

Nehwal won her first badminton title in 2002 when she won the U-13 Sub-Junior National title. She won the Junior National Championship in 2004, and the Senior National Championship three years later.

Similarly, she achieved her first international success in 2005 when she won the Asian Satellite Badminton Championship in India.

Similarly, at the age of 16, she made her World Champion debut in 2006 but was defeated in the first round by Jiang Yangjioa.

In the same year, she reached the Junior World Championship finals but came in second place.

Nehwal made her Olympic debut in 2008, making it as far as the quarterfinals before falling to Kristin Yulianti.

In 2008, she was successful in winning both the World Junior Championships and the Commonwealth Youth Championship.

They did, however, develop a rivalry when they are practicing because Nehwal wants to be the best. After they traveled to various countries together for events, their bond quickly grew stronger.

They have shared all of their professional highs and lows together. After injuries hampered Nehwal’s development in 2018, Kasyup decided to take on a new career as a coach.

To increase their chances of winning a medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, they are both training and working extremely hard.

Talking about Saina’s height she stands 5ft 5 inches tall. She weighs around 65 kg.

Due to aging and injuries, Saina Nehwal has recently had fitness issues.

Saina was physically fit, but her fitness wasn’t ideal for badminton. She started her new innings, though, with help from her husband, coach, and physio.
