Sarah Thomas is a professional American football referee who works for the National Football League (NFL).

Thomas was the first woman to officiate a major college football game, as well as the first to officiate in a bowl game at a Big Ten arena.

Thomas was hired as the NFL’s first full-time female official on April 8, 2015, and she was part of the officiating crew guided by referee Shawn Hochuli for the 2020 season.

In February 2021, she made history as the first female Super Bowl referee.

She worked with the Middle Mississippi Athletic Association for seven years before applying for junior college football.

In 2006, she was invited to umpire in Conference USA after ten years of high school dedication. As she stated, she had a 45-minute interview, and her communication skills were important in her career.

As a result, Sarah Thomas made history by being the first woman to officiate a major college football game in 2007. She has worked for two Conference USA games at Jacksonville State and one at the University of Memphis.

Bowl Games

Within two years, Thomas set yet another record by being the first person to officiate a bowl game. In 2009, she covered a major college football game alongside five other members.

She was the only player in the Football Bowl Subdivision to start in her third season.

Sarah also appeared in United Football League games, and she even officiated the league championship game in 2010. She also created history in 2011 when she became the first woman to officiate in a Big Ten stadium.

National Football League (NFL)

Sarah Thomas was chosen for the permanent NFL officiating post in 2013, and the NFL Referee Development program followed quickly behind. She went on to work in the college Senior Bowl for Division I athletes after that.

Now, we’ve arrived at the most exciting period of her life: being a full-time permanent officiate. She debuted with the Kansas City Chiefs versus the Houston Texans at NRG Stadium on September 13, 2015.
