American actor, animator, filmmaker, comedian, and singer Seth Woodbury MacFarlane is the creator of the popular television series Family Guy (since 1999). He is also the founder of the TED movie franchise.

Seth MacFarlane | Early Life, Family, and Education

Seth Woodbury MacFarlane was born in Kent, Connecticut, a small New England town on October 26, 1973. He grew up there with his sister Rachael MacFarlane, who is now a voice actress and singer, and his parents, prep school teacher Ronald Milton MacFarlane and Ann Perry (Sager), who worked in the admissions office.

He is descended from Mayflower passengers and has Scottish, Irish, and English ancestry.

As a child, Seth became interested in illustration because of shows like Woody Woodpecker and Fred Flintstone. Amazingly, Seth made the decision to become an animator at the age of five.

When he was nine years old, “Walter Crouton,” his first comic book, was published weekly in The Kent Good Times Dispatch and earned $5 per week from that comic.

In 1991, MacFarlane completed his schooling at Ken school. Afterward, Seth went to the Rhode Island School of Design to study film, video, and animation.

Seth MacFarlane | Career

Hanna-Barbera

Seth produced “The Life of Larry” as his senior film thesis during his time at RISD. His professor gave the Hanna-Barbera executives a copy of the movie.

Those bosses were so thrilled that they gave Seth a position right away. Seth contributed to several Hanna-Barbera projects. Larry & Steve, a 1996 adaptation of The Life of Larry, starred a lovable/dumb middle-aged guy named Larry and his devoted, perceptive dog, Steve.

During his time at the studio, MacFarlane contributed to three television shows: Dexter’s Laboratory, Cow and Chicken, and Johnny Bravo working as a storyboard artist and writer.

Family Guy

Fox execs requested that Seth present them with a TV concept after seeing Larry and Steve. After the unexpected success of their 1997 show “King of the Hill,” Fox decided to reconsider the idea they had first rejected.

Fox this time agreed to develop a pilot but only gave Seth a meager $50,000 to work with for his budget. A $1 million budget per episode was typical for animated prime-time television programs at the time.

Seth surprises fox executives with the pilot episodes and his concepts. Fox placed a complete season order right away. The youngest executive producer in television history at the time was Seth, who was 24.

On January 31, 1999, “Family Guy” made its debut just after Fox’s Super Bowl XXXIII telecast. 22 million people watched the premiere of the show. The first season was successful enough to deserve a second.

Cancellation of the show and revive

Unfortunately, the show’s second season ratings plummeted due to intense competition in the Thursday, 9 PM time slot. After the second season, Fox officially canceled the program in May 2000, but thanks to a last-minute reprieve, a third season was authorized and premiered in November 2001. Even if the show’s ratings kept getting better, it wasn’t enough. The summer of 2002 saw the formal cancellation of Family Guy.

When returns of Family Guy started appearing on Cartoon Network, the show gained popularity. In fact, it was the network’s highest-rated program overall, increasing viewing by more than 200%.

The first and second seasons of the show were made available on DVD in 2003.

Millions of copies of Seasons 1 and 2 were sold, making them the best-selling DVDs of 2003 and 2004. Currently, after Chappelle’s Show, the season 1 and season 2 combo is the TV DVD with the second-highest lifetime sales. Fox reinstated the program afterward and released the fourth season in May 2005.
