Shannon Sharpe is a former American football tight end and current sports analyst. He’s been a co-host of Skip and Shannon: Undisputed alongside Skip Bayless on Fox Sports 1 since 2016. He’s also been a CBS Sports NFL analyst. He is recognized as one of the all-time great tight ends.

Shannon Sharpe was born in the United States on June 26, 1968, in Chicago.

Shannon Sharpe was reared in poverty in Glennville, Georgia, by his grandmother Mary Porter, the youngest of Pete and Mary Alice Sharpe’s three children.

Sharpe’s parents divorced when he was three months old when he was only three months old. His father died of lung cancer when he was only eight years old. To augment his family’s meager earnings, he worked on a farm and in a tobacco field.

All of these events contributed to Shannon’s rough childhood. According to his academic records, he attended Glennville High School.

He received a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice after graduating from high school at Savannah State College.

Professional Life and Career

Early Years

Shannon began his professional career after enrolling at Savannah State College. He began his career by playing basketball and football.

Similarly, He also began competing in track and field, setting personal bests in the long jump of 6.73 meters and the triple jump of 14.73 meters.

He was a member of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference from 1987 to 1989. In 1987, Shannon was named SIAC Player of the Year. In 1989, he was awarded a Kodak Division II All-American.

He coached his college football team to 7-3 and 8-1 victories in 1988 and 1989, respectively. His total score for his college career was 3,744 yards and 40 touchdowns.

He was inducted into the Division II Football Hall of Fame in 2009, as well as the Savannah State Athletic Hall of Fame in 2010.

NFL Profession

Sharpe was unable to perform at his best throughout the early stages of the NFL. The main cause for this was his body weight of 104kg (230pounds). This size is too big to play tight end and too little to play receiver.

Fortunately, the Denver Broncos selected him in the 7th round of the 1990 NFL draft, with the 192nd overall choice. He played receiver for two more seasons until Denver switched him to tight end.

Sharpe won two Super Bowl victories between 1998 and 1999. (XXXII, XXXIII). General Mills put him in the spotlight with four other Broncos in their Wheaties boxes.

Shannon and his Baltimore Ravens team were victorious in Super Bowl XXXV. He rejoined the Denver Broncos in 2003 and played till then.

He retired after that to become a CBS NFL commentator.

Sharpe was a four-year member of the All-Pro Team, appearing in eight Pro Bowls and scoring eight touchdowns. Shannon’s 156 yards and a touchdown in the 1993 playoffs tied a postseason record.

He announced his retirement from sports after 14 years in football. Shannon’s 14-year adventure was a watershed moment in his life, with 10,060 yards and 62 touchdowns in 203 games.

After Football, What Comes Next?

Shannon worked as a pundit for CBS Sports’ ‘The NFL Show’ alongside James Brown until 2014, after retiring from sports in 2004.
