Stephen Glenn Martin, better known as Steve Martin, is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and musician. He has won five Grammy Awards, an Honorary Academy Award, and a Primetime Emmy Award. In addition, his 2016 musical Bright Star was nominated for two Tony Awards.

Steve Martin | Early Life, Family, and Education

Martin was born on the 14 of August 1945, in Waco, Texas. He is the son of Mary Lee and Glenn Vernon Martin, a real estate salesman and aspiring actor. His older sister is named Melinda.

After being reared in a Baptist home in Garden Grove, California, he and his sister later moved to Inglewood, California. Martin took engaged in cheerleading at Garden Grove High School. At Disneyland, Martin’s first job was selling guidebooks. He worked there full-time over the summer while school was out.

After graduating from high school, Martin studied acting and English poetry at Santa Ana College. He performed in comedies and other productions at the Bird Cage Theatre with his buddy and fellow Garden Grove High School student Kathy Westmoreland when they had free time.

Early Career

In 1967, he was able to get a writing job by submitting his work to the show’s chief writer Mason Williams. At the age of 23, Martin split the 1969 Emmy Award for best writing for the program with the other authors.

Martin also made his television debut on the show in 1968, and he wrote and performed for “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour” from 1971 to 1973. His stand-up comedy albums, “Let’s Get Small” (1977) and “A Wild and Crazy Guy” (1978), both of which went platinum and earned Steve two Grammy Awards, were both released during the middle of the 1970s.

Breakthrough

He frequently appeared on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” “The Gong Show,” “The Muppet Show,” and “Saturday Night Live.” The song “King Tut” from the million+ copy-selling album “A Wild and Crazy Guy” peaked at #17 on the “Billboard” Hot 100 chart.

Following The Jerk, Martin starred in three further comedies made by Reiner: Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid (1982), The Man with Two Brains (1983), and All of Me (1984), which received the most acclaim at the time.

Martin’s first stage play, Picasso in the Lapin Agile, was released in 1993. Tom Hanks and Chris Sarandon read the play aloud at their home in Beverly Hills, California, with Sarandon playing Picasso and Hanks as Einstein.

Comeback

In 2016, Martin made a comedic comeback and opened for Jerry Seinfeld. He performed a ten-minute stand-up routine before transferring to the stage to Seinfeld. Martin received two nominations for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special and Outstanding Music and Lyrics for The Buddy Song for the 2018 Netflix comedy special, Steve Martin and Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life.

Martin and Bernadette Peters costarred in The Jerk and Pennies from Heaven in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Additionally, he dated Karen Carpenter and also Mary Tyler Moore. On November 20, 1986, Martin married Victoria Tennant, an actress he had previously collaborated with on the movies All of Me and L.A. Story.

They divorced in 1994. Martin wed Anne Stringfield, a writer and formerly employed staff member of The New Yorker, on July 28, 2007.
