The co-founder and former CEO of Death Row Records in the United States, Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr., is a convicted felon. He established one of the first immensely popular music labels in the rap sector, “Death Row Records.”
Early Life, Family, Education
Marion Hugh Knight Jr. was born on April 19, 1965, in Compton, California, as the youngest of three siblings. His father, who was also a singer, nicknamed him “Suge,” which translates to “Sugar Bear.”
He had participated in several terrible acts with the notorious neighborhood gang “Mob Piru Bloods,” of which he was a member.
In his later years, he continued to display his love for the gang by donning their colors. Throughout his time at school, he was a terrific athlete and student while still being a member of a criminal gang.
He accepted a football scholarship and enrolled at the “University of Nevada.” Because of his abilities there, he was able to make the dean’s list.
He pursued a professional football career while spending two years on the university team. The “Los Angeles Rams” quickly acquired him. However, he did not get many chances to play with them. He took part in just two games, mostly filling in.
How Did Suge Knight Start His Career In Football?
Knight, who had Bobby Brown as one of his customers, briefly played defensive line for the Los Angeles Rams before becoming a bodyguard and breaking into the music business. Knight had started his own publishing company by the late 1980s.
In a meeting on a balcony, Vanilla Ice allegedly agreed to pay Knight royalties after using some of his songs on his 1990 blockbuster album To the Extreme.
Death Row Records
Knight eventually co-founded Death Row Records via Time Warner’s Interscope division with producer and rapper Dr. Dre, who in 1992 released his best-selling album The Chronic.
Because of further hits like Snoop Dogg’s 1993 album release and the Above the Rim soundtrack, Death Row made a big contribution to the expansion of West Coast hip-hop in the 1990s.
In addition to running a car hydraulics business and opening Club 662 in Las Vegas, Knight was also renowned for his charity efforts in adjacent Californian towns.
Murders of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls
On September 7, 1996, Tupac Shakur was struck by a car and shot to death. Tupac was traveling with Suge Knight. At 11:15 p.m., Shakur was shot four times as a white Cadillac approached Knight’s right side.
Knight suffered a head wound from gunshot residue. After being stopped by police and having paramedics called, Knight was able to travel one mile.
Six days after being admitted to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, Shakur passed suddenly.
The LA Times claimed that a Compton gang fired the shot, despite the fact that there are several competing theories on who killed Tupac Shakur.
On March 9, 1997, Biggie Smalls, an Assata Shakur foe from the East Coast, was also murdered in a similar way.
Theorizing that Knight was involved in both murders and that Biggie’s death was the result of retaliation, Snoop Dog and other former Death Row inmates.
