Sun Yang was born in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China on December 1, 1991. Sun is an only child from an athletic family. Similarly, Sun’s nationality is Chinese.

2010 Asian Games
Sun achieved even more success at the 2010 Asian Games. Sun claimed gold in the 1500m freestyle and the 4200m freestyle relay, as well as silver medals in the 200m and 400m freestyles.

Similarly, Sun’s 1500m freestyle time of 14:35.43 set a new Asian record and was the quickest time in history, trailing only Grant Hackett’s record, which Sun would later break the following year.
2011 World Aquatics Championships
Sun finished second in the 400m freestyle, having lost to South Korean Park Tae-hwan in 3:43.24. Sun went on to win his first World Championship title in the 800-meter freestyle just three days later with a time of 7:38.57.

Moreover, Sun started competing in the 1500-meter freestyle on the last day of the competition. He won the race in 14:34.14, ten seconds faster than the rest of the field.

2012 Summer Olympics
Sun was regarded as a favorite in the 400 and 1500-meter freestyles, in addition to a medal contender in the 200-meter freestyle, going into the Games.
Further, Sun won gold in his first event with a time of 3:40.14 and became the first Chinese male swimmer to do so at the Olympics. Sun did compete in the 200-meter freestyle after a day of rest.
In the main event, he tied Park Tae-hwan for silver with a time of 1:44.93, a new national record.

Sun Yang | Doping ban
The Chinese Swimming Association banned Sun for three months in May 2014 after he tested positive for the stimulant trimetazidine. It had been added to the World Anti-Doping Agency’s prohibited list four months earlier.
Sun clarified that he was given a prescription stimulant by a doctor to treat the heart palpitation he had been experiencing since 2008. Also, he was unaware that it had recently been added to the list of prohibited substances.
Moreover, Sun was eligible to request a medical exception for the drug due to his heart condition. But Sun did not do so.
Trimetazidine was reclassified and downgraded from “stimulant” to “modulator of cardiac metabolism” by the World Anti-Doping Agency in January 2015. But even so, the drug is still illegal as of 2016.
2014 China Spring Nationals
Yang won a gold medal in the men’s 200-meter freestyle during his first post-suspension event at the 2014 China Spring Nationals.
2016 Summer Olympics
Sun won a gold medal in the 200-meter freestyle at the 2016 Summer Olympics, his first big global title in this event.
Additionally, Sun was the first swimmer in history to win gold medals in the 200m, 400m, and 1500m freestyle events.
