Aaron Dontez Yates, an American rapper, singer, songwriter, record producer, actor, and entrepreneur from Kansas City, Missouri, is better known by his stage name Tech N9NE.

He is renowned for his lightning-fast delivery and his 19 solo studio albums. Television programs like The Simpsons and ER have played his music.

Tech N9ne | Childhood & Early Life

On November 8, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri, Aaron Dontez Yates, better known as Tech N9ne, was born. A morally bankrupt man named Carlton Cook, his father lived in Los Angeles and worked for the LAPD. Although he frequently visited Kansas City, he abandoned the family when Aaron was quite small.

Maude Sue Yates-Khalifah, a talented pianist and adherent to rigorous Christian tradition, welcomed Aaron to the family. His grandmother, a few aunts, and uncles all resided with them in a modest home in the Wayne Miner projects. Their home was strictly off-limits to alcohol and partying.

Aaron’s mother had lupus and epilepsy, which she had been dealing with since she was 18. As a small child, Aaron was tremendously troubled by this. In his sorrow, he started looking for “God,” exploring the deserted buildings with his best buddy Brian Dennis in the hopes of filming a ghost.

Rapping came effortlessly to Aaron from a very young age, even though rap music was forbidden entirely in the home. According to legend, he rapped his name’s letters to help him remember them more quickly.

By 1984, he had become completely engrossed in music, was working to polish his rhythm, and had begun to earn notoriety as a dancer and a rapper.

Moreover, this caused him to clash with his stepfather, who had never been a fan of rap music. Finally, when he was 17, he moved in with his grandma and out of his house.

Tech N9ne | Career

Tech N9ne first experienced freedom to pursue his dream while residing with his grandma. It also exposed him to a more sinister aspect of existence. Nevertheless, he persisted in singing and dancing, catching the eye of Tanya, who would later go by the stage name Sole.

Tanya asked him to accompany her to a rap gathering in New Orleans, where he eventually got his big break. He joined the 1991-founded rap group “Black Mafia” in late 1991 when he was just 20 years old.

Along with a select group of musicians, including Dynomack and Mark Hill, he relocated to Los Angeles in 1993. They were given the chance to record with Terry Lewis and Jimmy Jam there. They were disappointed when it didn’t happen, so they dejectedly went back to Kansas City.

When they got back to Kansas City in 1993, they started chatting about the chance they lost in Los Angeles. Mark Hill abruptly informed the group that nothing could be done because they had already entered the “Nut House.” It inspired a new thought in Tech N9ne.

In a phone call to his childhood friend Brian Dennis, he announced plans to start a new band called “Nnutthowze.” The group eventually came together, performing a few gigs in their area before disbanding.

Tech N9ne | Career After 1993

He joined the 1995-formed 57th Street Rogue Dog Villians in 1995, a group that had seen some success with its singles “It’s On Now” and “Let’s Get Fucked Up.” Later that year, the band issued their debut record, “My Dogs for Life,” on which he sang several songs.

While still a member of 57th Street Rogue Dog Villians, Tech N9ne secured a contract with Qwest Records in 1997 to begin work on his debut album, “Be Warned.” He was left in a bind when Qwest Records opted to shelf the record after it was finished.

Tech N9ne  joined the hip-hop group “The Regime” founded by the rapper Yukmouth in 1997 as well. He made his cinematic debut that same year and was a featured artist on the “Gang Related” soundtrack.
