Terrell Owens | Early Life, Family, and Education

Marilyn Heard and her neighbor L.C. Russell gave birth to Owens in Alexander City, Alabama. He discovered his father’s identity at the age of ten after falling in love with his daughter, only to discover that she was his sister.

Owens played basketball, football, and track & field at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. In 1995, Owens competed in the NCAA basketball tournament. He gained the starting spot in his second year.

Terrell Owens | Career

San Francisco 49ers

Owens’ visibility to NFL scouts decreased, and he was picked 89th overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the third round of the 1996 NFL Draft. More, Owens made his professional debut as a member of the 49ers’ special teams against the New Orleans Saints.

Owens replaced Rice in the lineup, defeating former first-round pick J.J. Stokes. That season, he and quarterback Young helped the 49ers win 13 games. Owens has 60 receptions for 754 yards and four touchdowns in 1999.

The 2001 49ers finished 12-4 but were upset by the Packers in a Wild Card playoff game. Owens finished with 16 touchdown receptions and 1,412 yards.

On March 4, 2004, San Francisco attempted to trade Owens to the Baltimore Ravens for a second-round pick 2004. Owens, on the other hand, questioned the 49ers’ capacity to make the move. Later, Owens figured he’d be a free agent on March 3, and he didn’t think the early deadline applied to him.

Philadelphia Eagles

Owens suffered a severely damaged ankle and a fractured fibula on December 19, 2004, after Dallas Cowboys safety Roy Williams tackled him with a horse-collar technique; Williams’ horse-collar tackles injured several NFL players, and the horse-collar tackle was finally banned.

Owens announced in April 2005 that he had acquired a new agent, Drew Rosenhaus and that he planned to renegotiate his contract with the Eagles. On July 1, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and team president Joe Banner denied Owens permission to participate in a summer league organized by the NBA’s Sacramento Kings, further straining his relationship with the team.

Later, Owens was released by the Philadelphia Eagles on March 14, 2006.

Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys signed Owens to a three-year contract on March 18, 2006. Owens returned to the field for the Cowboys’ season opener against the Jaguars in 2006. After the Cowboys’ 38-28 victory over the Atlanta Falcons, owner Jerry Jones revealed that Owens had strained a tendon in the same finger that he had fractured earlier in the season.

Owens and the Cowboys began to live up to their potential in the 2007 season. Owens set a new career high and tied a franchise record with four touchdown catches against the Washington Redskins on November 18. However, Owens, along with teammates Jason Witten and DeMarcus Ware, was named to the All-Pro team on January 9.

Eventually, Owens was released by the Cowboys on March 4, 2009.

Buffalo Bills

On March 8, 2009, the Buffalo Bills signed Owens to a one-year contract. Owens debuted with two catches for 45 yards. Moreover, Owens scored his first touchdown pass with the Buffalo Bills in a 33-20 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on September 20, 2009.

After that, Owens and Ryan Fitzpatrick set a Bills record for the longest touchdown reception when Fitzpatrick connected with Owens for a 98-yard score, which also set a career-high for Owens. He had 55 catches for 829 yards and 5 receiving touchdowns in his lone season with Buffalo.

Cincinnati Bengals

On July 27, 2010, Owens signed a one-year contract with the Cincinnati Bengals. Owens played his final active season in the NFL as the active career leader in receiving yards after Isaac Bruce retired.

Later, on December 21, Owens was placed on injured reserve for the first time in his 15-year career.

Allen Wranglers

On November 2, 2011, the Allen Wranglers of the Indoor Football League announced that they had extended a six-figure contract offer to Owens for the 2012 season. Owens was also freed from prison on May 29, 2012. The Wranglers’ co-owners released Owens due to a lack of effort both on and off the field.

Canadian Football League

On June 19, 2018, the Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) added Owens to their contract negotiations. On July 14, Owens triggered his 10-day signing window with the Eskimos.

Terrell Owens | Personal Life

Owens has three children: two sons and two girls. Melanie Paige Smith III, Owens’ daughter’s mother, sued him in September 2011 for failure to pay child support, but the case was settled before it went to trial.

Moreover, three of Owens’ four children’s mothers accused him of either underpaying or neglecting to pay child support on a May 8, 2012 edition of Dr. Phil. Owens said that he used to pay $45,000 per month in child support.

Controversies

On September 26, 2006, a police report appeared to substantiate Owens’ suicide attempt. According to his publicist, he was discovered comatose next to an empty bottle of tablets and was rushed to Baylor Medical Center.

DeAngelo Hall, a Falcons cornerback, claimed Owens spat in his face following a play on December 16, 2006. Owens confirmed the incident and apologized, but the NFL fined him $35,000 for it.
