Early Life, Education, and Family

Thomas William Selleck was born in Detroit, Michigan, on January 29th, 1945 to his parents Robert D. Selleck and Martha S. Jagger. When Tom was a little boy, his family moved to Sherman Oaks, California.

While attending Los Angeles Valley College, he initially resided with his parents; however, he eventually received a basketball scholarship to the University of Southern California.

When he was there, he studied business administration, but after a professor advised him to attempt acting, he changed his mind.

By his senior year, Selleck had dropped out of school in order to pursue an acting career. Selleck joined the American military at this time to fight in the Vietnam War. Selleck joined the California National Guard from 1967 to 1973 as a result.

Early Career

Tom Selleck’s early career was significantly shaped by his commercial performances. He became well-known after starring in television advertisements for goods including Coca-Cola, Right Guard Deodorant, Dubonnet, Chaz Cologne by Revlon, and Close-Up toothbrush.

The most well-known of his “Marlboro Man” television commercials for Marlboro. With time, Selleck started to make a name for himself in both cinema and television.

Selleck became well-known after landing small roles in The Rockford Files, where he frequently appeared. Tom Selleck’s portrayal of a cowboy in the 1979 film The Sacketts reflected his love of the great outdoors.

Magnum P.I.

His professional counselors deemed it a mistake and a departure from his prior filmography for him to appear in a six-episode season of Friends. Selleck took up the position and hired a new firm.  For this role, he received an Emmy nomination in 2000 for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy.
