Tommy Hunter is a well-known veteran pitcher in Major League Baseball (MLB). He has been a member of the league since 2008. Hunter began his MLB career after being selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the 2007 supplemental draft.

Early Career

Tommy Hunter excelled at baseball while attending college. He was recognized as Cathedral High School’s All-City Player of the Year in 2004 and 2005 during his senior year.

Hunter enrolled at the University of Alabama after graduating from high school. He contributed significantly to the Alabama Crimson Tide while he was a student at the university.

Prior to his sophomore year, he was also selected for the preseason and second teams of All-America.

He assisted the United States National Baseball Team in 2006 in bringing home the most coveted gold medal by helping them win the World University Baseball Championship.

MLB Career

After being selected by the Texas Rangers in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft, Tommy’s childhood dream was realized.

Hunter became the fourth-youngest player in the American League when he made his major league debut on August 1, 2008, at the age of 22.

However, he was later dealt to the Chicago Cubs before going to the Baltimore Orioles. Hunter joined the Cleveland Indians in 2016 and signed a one-year deal.

He signed a minor deal with the Tampa Bay Rays after one season with them. He also spent two years playing for the Philadelphia Phillies.

On May 2, 2022, Tommy agreed to a minor league contract with the New York Mets.

Injury

The string of injuries had a significant impact on Hunter’s professional life. He was placed on a 15-day injured list in 2014 after failing to make two consecutive saves.

Tommy had two operations to fix a core muscle injury a year later. Hunter was once again placed on the injured list in 2016 as a result of his nondisplaced fracture. While attempting to catch his son before he fell back inside his house, he suffered a fracture.

Similar to this, he suffered a calf injury in 2017 and was put on the 10-Day Disabled List.

Tommy suffered a career-threatening injury in 2021. He was found to have multiple disk herniations, and he needed several operations to fix them.

After receiving the diagnosis, he was placed on the 60-day injured list. Thankfully, he recovered from his wounds and made a significant comeback in 2022.
