Early Career

Williams spent his first three years of high school at Phoebus High School in Hampton, Virginia, before transferring to Oak Hill Academy for his senior year.

As a senior in 2012–13, he had nine double-doubles and averaged 16.2 points, 4.0 assists, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game.

After helping Oak Hill to a 34-5 regular-season record and a trip to the National High School Invitational, he was voted Virginia’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

In his first season at Indiana in 2013–14, Troy started all 32 games and averaged 7.3 points and 4.4 rebounds while shooting 50.9 percent from the field.

Moreover, Troy was selected Big Ten Freshman of the Week on March 10, 2014.

Troy started 28 of the 32 games in which he participated as a sophomore in 2014–15. He received the Big Ten Player of the Week award on December 22.

In six games at Las Vegas, he averaged three rebounds, 12.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.7 steals in 22.2 minutes per game. The Memphis Grizzlies acquired him on August 8, 2016.

Williams was added to the Grizzlies’ opening-night roster after making an impression on the team during training camp and the preseason.

He played in the Grizzlies’ second game on October 29, 2016, a 111-104 loss to the New York Knicks.

In nine minutes on the bench, he finished with three points, one assist, and two steals.

He contributed 18 points to a 110-107 victory over the Miami Heat on November 26, 2016.

He was released by the Grizzlies on January 30, 2017. Throughout Williams’ time with Memphis, he was frequently sent to the Iowa Energy of the NBA Development League.

On February 21, 2018, Troy agreed to a 10-day contract with the New York Knicks. On March 13, 2018, he agreed to a multi-year deal.

Similarly, On April 2, the Knicks announced that he will miss the remainder of the season due to a broken jaw. He was formally released by the Knicks on July 16, 2018.

Williams committed to the New Orleans Pelicans on July 27, 2018. He was released from his contract on October 17, 2018.

The professional basketball player and the Stockton Kings, a Sacramento Kings G League affiliate, signed a two-way contract on October 20.

Williams was inserted into the Northern Arizona Suns’ training camp roster on October 27, 2019.

Williams signed a one-year deal with Carpegna Prosciutto Basket Pesaro in the Italian Serie A on December 12.

He made the choice to leave the squad on March 9, 2020, when the coronavirus outbreak made it necessary to postpone all basketball games.

Injury

Troy Williams cracked his jaw in the fourth quarter of the Pistons’ 115-109 loss in 2018, forcing him to miss the rest of the season.

There were just five games left in the season and little to play for, so this injury couldn’t have come at a worse time. It goes without saying that it is never good when a player is harmed.

He had, though, demonstrated sufficient talent and athleticism for the team to be optimistic about his future.
