Tyler, the Creator is the stage name of Tyler Gregory Okonma, an American rapper and music producer.

Early Life, Family, Ethnicity, and Education

Tyler Gregory Okonma was born on March 6, 1991, in the Ladera Heights section of Los Angeles, California.

His mother is a mixed-race African-American and European-Canadian. His Nigerian father, who is from Nigeria, has never met him. He spent the majority of his boyhood in the Greater Los Angeles neighborhoods of Ladera Heights and Hawthorne.

As a kid, he copied album covers to make his own tracklists and cover art. He taught himself how to play the piano when he was 14 years old, which was seven years later.

He attended 12 different schools in the Los Angeles and Sacramento regions over the course of his 12 years in school.

While still a high school student, Tyler the Creator spent about two years working at FedEx and Starbucks. He first used the name Tyler the Creator on his MySpace profile.

Odd Future, Bastard, and Goblin

The alternative hip-hop trio Odd Future was created in 2007 by Okonma, Hodgy, Left Brain, and Casey Veggies. They self-released The Odd Future Tape, their first mixtape, in November 2008.

On December 25, 2009, Okonma self-released Bastard, his debut mixtape. The mixtape finally ranked number 32 on Pitchfork Media’s list of the Top Albums of 2010.

At the beginning of 2011, notable figures from the music industry, including Steve Rifkind, Jimmy Iovine, Rick Ross, and Jay-Z, expressed interest in Okonma. Okonma and the other members of Odd Future ultimately reached an understanding with Red Distribution/Sony in April 2011.

His debut studio album, Goblin, was made available on May 10, 2011. The debut television performance of “Sandwitches” by Okonma and fellow Odd Future member Hodgy Beats took place on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on February 16, 2011.

Cherry Bomb

On April 9, 2015, Okonma posted the music video for “Fucking Young” on Odd Future’s official YouTube channel.

The video included a small snippet of the song “Deathcamp.” On April 13, 2015, Okonma announced that the tracks will appear on his upcoming album Cherry Bomb, which would then be released.

According to a tweet from Okonma, the album will feature Charlie Wilson, Chaz Bundick, and Cole Alexander of the Black Lips.

Okonma strongly reprimanded VIP attendance, many of whom were celebrities, for their lack of enthusiasm throughout the performance.

Moreover, on August 26, 2015, Okonma claimed that he had been barred from entering the UK for three to five years.

As a result, he was obliged to cancel several tour dates, including the Reading and Leeds Festivals, in order to promote the Cherry Bomb album.

In Eminem’s song “Fall,” which was released on August 31, 2018, it was claimed that Okonma was a homophobe and that he used sexuality to seek attention in his songs. Eminem also slammed Okonma and Shady XV for criticizing his song “Walk On Water” (2014). Eminem responded to criticism of his lyrics in an interview with Sway by saying,

“I think the word that I called him was one of the things where I felt like this might be too far. In my quest to hurt him, I realized I was hurting a lot of other people. It was one of the things that I kept going back to. Not feeling right with this”
