Will Smith is banned from the Oscars for 10 years! And this incident happened after slapping Chris Rock live on camera during the award show
Similarly, the incident came in the final hour of an Oscars telecast on March 27. Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Smith took the stage and slapped him. However, Will still won an Oscar award.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated in a letter on April 8,
“This action we are taking today in response to Will Smith’s behavior is a step toward a larger goal of protecting the safety of our performers and guests and restoring trust in the Academy. We also hope this can begin a time of healing and restoration for all involved and impacted.”
Moreover, Will resigned from the Academy on April 1 and stated,
“I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
On the day of Oscar
Chris Rock shows his appearance at the Oscars to announce the winner for Best Documentary. Furthermore, while announcing the nominees, Rock went through a little comedic pattern about some of the nominees.
Likewise, Chris saw Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith who was sitting in front in a green gown with a shaved head. He said,
“Jada, I love you, G.I. Jane 2, can’t wait to see it, all right?”
Moreover, after listening to this, Jada’s face went stony. In addition, Smith got to his feet, marched onto the stage, and slapped Chris Rock in the face.
Though the audio of the US broadcast went out at that point, it still continued uncensored in other countries, including Japan and Australia.
Replying to that slap, Rock said, “Wow! Wow! Will Smith just smacked the shit out of me, everybody.”
After that, “Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth,” Will Smith shouted from the audience.
“Wow, dude, It was a G.I. Jane joke”, Rock replied.
In addition, angrily Smith repeated,
“Keep my wife’s name out your fucking mouth”
“I’m going to. Okay?” Rock said.
Similarly, he paused for a second, double-taking, and the audio in the US came back again just in time to catch Chris saying,
“That was the greatest night in the history of television. Okay. Okay.”
A few minutes later, Will became the winner of the Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in King Richard. Likewise, in that, he played Richard Williams, father of Venus and Serena Williams.
“Richard Williams was a fierce defender of his family,” Will started as he took the stage. “At this time in my life, I am overwhelmed by what God is calling on me to do and be in this world.”He added “Love makes you do crazy things,” pointing to his behavior regarding the slap.
In addition to that, he also mentioned a remark from his friend Denzel Washington which was shared during the break between the slap and acceptance speech.
He said, “Be careful at your highest moment… that’s when the devil comes for you.”
During the commercial break, Will Smith is pulled aside and comforted by Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry, who motion for him to brush it off. Will appears to wipe tears from his eyes as he sits back down with Jada, with Denzel comforting Jada and Will’s rep by his side. pic.twitter.com/uDGVnWrSS2

Similarly, with teary eyes, Smith apologized,
“I want to apologize to the Academy. I want to apologize to all my fellow nominees. This is a beautiful moment. And I’m not crying for winning an award. It’s not about winning an award for me. It’s about being able to shine a light on all the people.”
During the acceptance speech, he apologized to all the Academy attendees as well as the audience but he failed to mention the main victim of the incident.
Is the Apology Sincere? You Decide!
Furthermore, the following Monday, he apologizes to Chris Rock on Instagram saying,
“I would like to publicly apologize to you, Chris.”
He continues saying
“I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

Jada Pinkett| Alopecia condition
In addition, Pinkett Smith has alopecia which is an autoimmune disease that results in hair loss. Likewise, Jada first went public with her diagnosis in the year 2018 on her Facebook Live show Red Table Talk.
According to Jada Pinkett Smith,
“It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, ‘Oh my god, am I going bald?’’
Similarly, in July 2021, Pinkett shaved her head, saying her daughter Willow convinced her “it was time to let go.”
Chris is familiar with the vexed politics surrounding Black women’s hair. In the year 2009, Rock produced and starred in the documentary Good Hair, about how Black women have historically thought about and styled their hair.

He has also targeted Jada in his Oscars humor before. When Rock hosted the Oscars in the year 2016, it was in the midst of the #OscarsSoWhite protests.
Similarly, Pinkett was one of many major Black celebrities who had committed to boycotting the Oscars to protest their lack of diversity.
Chris Rock said,
“Jada got mad, said she’s not coming. Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited,”
Furthermore, in a statement to The Wrap, the LAPD said Chris declined to file a police report on Will Smith.
Although Will smith apologized on Instagram after the incident, he is yet to apologize in Person!
