Wladimir became a professional under the tutelage of Fritz Sdunek, a German pro boxing trainer who also coached his brother. He had a 24-fight winning streak with 22 knockouts until succumbing to American boxer Ross Purity in a contest in Ukraine.

Moreover, he never fought another professional fight in Ukraine after that. He knocked out his 1996 Olympics opponent, Paea Wolfgramm, in the opening round of a professional fight in 2000.

Later that year, he seized the WBO heavyweight championship from America’s Chris Byrd, whom he had previously defeated.

He went on to defend his championship over Derrick Jefferson, Frans Botha, Charles Shufford, Ray Mercer, & Jameel McCline five times.

In 2006, he defeated Chris Byrd by technical knockout in a fight for the ‘IBO’ and ‘IBF’ heavyweight belts.

Again, In 2008, he defended his ‘IBF’ and IBO heavyweight championships and won the WBO heavyweight title by beating Sultan Ibragimov in New York City.

Klitschko last defended his heavyweight championship versus British boxer Anthony Joshua in 2017. He announced his retirement from professional boxing in August 2017.

Moreover, he had a record of 64 victories from 69 matches, including 53 knockouts. He holds the record for the most heavyweight title victories (25), the most uncontested championship wins (15), and the most straight defenses of his title (14).
