A goalkeeper for both the Swiss national team and Bundesliga Club Borussia Mönchengladbach, Yann Sommer is a Swiss professional football player. Sommer completed his apprenticeship in Basel, where he won the Swiss Super League four times in a row, before relocating to Mönchengladbach in 2014.

Early Career & Life

On December 17, 1988, the goalkeeper was born in Morges, Switzerland, a town near Lake Geneva. Sommer is the proud son of Daniel Sommer and Monika Sommer.

The youngster had a strong enthusiasm for sports, particularly football, and his parents gave him plenty of encouragement.

Yann, who transferred to Concordia Basel at the age of 13, focused on developing his incubation abilities before FC Basel spotted the aspiring goalie in 2003.

Sommer was almost likely to start for the U-21 team because of his robust skill set.

The young Swiss continued to be the third option for the first team after Franco Costanzo and Louis Crayton. To obtain first-team experience, the teenage goalkeeper concurrently accepted loan offers from FC Vaduz and Grasshopper.

In 2003, FC Basel made a request for Sommer to sign a professional contract. The Swiss player quickly seized the top spot for the young team due to his exceptional qualities.

However, Yann was the reserve goaltender for the first team. FC Basel was impressed by the young Swiss man’s performances and saw a promising future for him.

Yann was happy to extend his Basel contract, keeping him there until 2011. FC Basel wanted their rookie goalkeeper to develop over time and gain experience.

Yann’s signing with FC Vaduz was hence warmly welcomed. While in Vaduz with the Swiss 1. Liga squad, the prospective goalie practiced in a competitive setting.

The Swiss team received a similar promotion after 33 games, moving them to the Swiss Super League.

After that, FC Vaduz extended the loan arrangement; however, it was canceled early because Franco Costanzo, FC Basel’s starting goalkeeper, got hurt. He was under contract to his parent club, Grasshopper Zurich, for the duration of the season.

Yann and his teammates at Borussia Monchengladbach, on the other hand, are battling for that title and very certainly a spot in the Champions League.

International Career

Initially, Gladbach Number 1 represented Switzerland in the U-16, U-17, U-19, and U-21 games. The Swiss debuted their national kit for the U-17 team’s match against England in 2003.

Against Belgium in 2007, Yann made his U-21 debut as a replacement. Similarly to that, Sommer was one of the 23 players chosen by the head coach of Switzerland for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
